What is the best treatment for psoriasis?

Leon L asked:

I have it on my fingers and the skin breaks up and bleeds. It has been diagnosed by a consultant as a hybrid type of psoriasis. Need help!

No single treatment works for everyone. The goal is to find a treatment that works the best with the fewest side effects. Your doctor will look at what kind of psoriasis you have and recommend the treatment regimen that is best for you.

Topical treatments–agents applied to the skin–are usually the first line of defense in treating psoriasis.

Systemics are prescription medications that affect the entire body, and are usually reserved for patients with moderate to severe psoriasis. Biologics are a type of systemic medication.

Psoriasis is treatable with topical steriods, but they only suppress the symptoms, they don’t treat the cause. Stress is a major cause of psoriasis outbreaks and anything you can do to reduce stress in your life can help reduce the symptoms.

I use an essential oil mix to treat my psoriasis: lavender, bergamot and neroli in jojoba oil. It isn’t a cure, but helps keep it under control without using steroids. All three oils are useful in reducing stress and treating skin conditions.

Diet can also affect psoriasis. Alcohol, caffeine, sugar and other stimulants can make it worse. Reducing the use of stimulants, doing a colon detox and eating organic foods can help.

I think it depends on the type of psoriasis you have..It can be local application of a steroid cream, a retinoid cream or a combination of a steroid plus a retioid cream. In severe forms, you might have to take certain oral medications(tablets) prescribed by a dermatologist.
Again, the doctor is the best person to decide the treatment for you.
    Good Luck
